When a Dumpster Doesn’t Fit: Meet Tommy Carts

Traditional dumpsters work well for many projects, but they aren't the right solution for every jobsite. That's why Industrial Disposal Services brought Tommy Carts to the DC Metro area.

Built for Tight Jobsites

Interior renovations, tenant fit-outs and occupied-building projects don't always have room for a traditional dumpster. Crews may be working several floors away from the loading area, navigating elevators and hallways, or dealing with very limited exterior space.

Tommy Carts can be rolled directly to the work area so debris is collected where it's generated. Once the carts are full, IDS picks them up and exchanges them for empty carts to keep the project moving.

Less Double Handling, More Efficiency

Without a container near the work area, debris may be collected, moved through the building, staged and then moved again to a dumpster. Every extra step takes time and labor.

Tommy Carts reduce that double handling by allowing crews to place debris directly into the container IDS will ultimately haul away. They also provide a designated place for waste throughout the project, helping keep work areas cleaner and more organized.

A Better Fit for DC Metro Construction

We work with contractors throughout Northern Virginia, Washington, DC and the surrounding region, and every jobsite is different.

A ground-up construction project may have plenty of room for dumpsters, while an interior renovation in downtown DC may have almost none. Occupied offices, multifamily buildings, hospitals and retail spaces create additional challenges because construction has to happen alongside the people using those spaces.

We didn't bring Tommy Carts to the region to replace dumpsters. We brought them here to give our customers another option.

Responsible Processing at Broad Run Recycling

The container may be different, but our commitment to responsible processing isn't.

Material collected through our Tommy Carts service is transported to our sister company, Broad Run Recycling, where construction and demolition material is sorted and processed to recover recyclable commodities and divert material from the landfill whenever possible.

The Right Solution for the Jobsite

Our goal at IDS isn't to fit every project into the same waste plan. t's to understand the jobsite and find the solution that makes the most sense.

Sometimes that's a traditional dumpster. Sometimes it's Tommy Carts. On some projects, it may be a combination of both.

Bringing Tommy Carts to the DC Metro area gives contractors another way to manage construction waste when space, access and logistics make a traditional dumpster difficult.
